Ingredients:
For the steak:
- 4 cube steaks (tenderized beef)
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt and black pepper (to taste)
- Oil for frying
For the gravy:
- 3 tbsp pan drippings (or butter)
- 3 tbsp flour
- 2 cups milk
- Salt and black pepper (to taste)
Instructions:
- Season the cube steaks with salt and pepper.
- In one bowl, mix flour with garlic powder and onion powder.
- In another bowl, whisk eggs and buttermilk.
- Dredge each steak in flour, dip into the egg mixture, then back into the flour. Press well for a thick coating.
- Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
- Fry steaks for 3–5 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. Remove and set aside.
- For the gravy, remove excess oil but keep about 3 tbsp drippings in the pan.
- Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes until golden.
- Gradually whisk in milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
- Cook until thickened, then season with salt and plenty of black pepper.
