Cook time: 25 minutes
Serves: 4

Ingredients

Beef patties

  • 1½ lb (680 g) ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Onion gravy

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard, optional
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Mix the patties. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently just until combined.
  2. Shape and brown. Form the mixture into four oval patties. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for about 3–4 minutes per side. They do not need to cook through yet. Transfer them to a plate.
  3. Cook the onions. Reduce the heat to medium and add the butter to the skillet. Add the sliced onion and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly golden.
  4. Make the gravy. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir for about 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the beef broth. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard, if using. Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer.
  5. Finish cooking. Return the patties and any juices to the skillet. Cover and simmer for 10–12 minutes, turning the patties once, until cooked through. Ground beef should reach 160°F (71°C) in the center.
  6. Serve. Taste the gravy and adjust the seasoning. Spoon it over the patties and serve warm.

Serving Ideas

Serve Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, rice, or buttered noodles to make a hearty meal.

Tips

  • Mix the beef gently so the patties stay tender.
  • If the gravy gets too thick, stir in a little extra broth.
  • For extra flavor, use the browned bits from the skillet when making the gravy.
