Crispy Fried Mushrooms Recipe

Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 10-15 minutes Servings: 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound button or cremini mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or 1 cup milk mixed with 1 tablespoon lemon juice)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Clean the mushrooms with a damp paper towel and slice them into even pieces.
  2. Set up your breading station with three shallow bowls:
    • Bowl 1: Mix flour with garlic powder, paprika, thyme, salt, and pepper
    • Bowl 2: Whisk together buttermilk and eggs
    • Bowl 3: Additional flour for the final coating
  3. Heat oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C). The oil should be about 2 inches deep.
  4. Dredge each mushroom slice in the seasoned flour (Bowl 1), then dip in the buttermilk mixture (Bowl 2), and finally coat with the plain flour (Bowl 3).
  5. Carefully place the breaded mushrooms in the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  6. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  8. Season with additional salt while still hot if desired.

Serving Suggestions: Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce such as:

  • Ranch dressing
  • Garlic aioli
  • Spicy mayo
  • Marinara sauce

Storage: Best served immediately while crispy. Can be reheated in an oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes to restore crispiness.

Tips:

  • Make sure mushrooms are dry before coating to ensure crispiness
  • Maintain oil temperature between 350-375°F for best results
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan while frying
  • You can add different seasonings to the flour mixture for variety
