Delicious Texas Sheet Cake Bites

Ingredients

For the cake

1 cup water

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup sour cream

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the chocolate frosting

1/4 cup unsalted butter

2 tablespoons cocoa powder

3 tablespoons milk

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine water, butter, and cocoa powder. Stir until the butter melts and the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Add the warm cocoa mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until combined.
  5. Stir in the sour cream, egg, and vanilla extract until the batter is smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 18–22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. While the cake is still warm, prepare the frosting by melting butter in a small saucepan.
  8. Stir in cocoa powder and milk, then remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
  9. Pour the warm frosting over the warm cake and spread evenly. Sprinkle with chopped pecans if desired.
  10. Allow the cake to cool completely, then cut into small bite-sized squares.
