Ingredients
For the cake
1 cup water
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sour cream
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the chocolate frosting
1/4 cup unsalted butter
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
3 tablespoons milk
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine water, butter, and cocoa powder. Stir until the butter melts and the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat.
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the warm cocoa mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until combined.
- Stir in the sour cream, egg, and vanilla extract until the batter is smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 18–22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- While the cake is still warm, prepare the frosting by melting butter in a small saucepan.
- Stir in cocoa powder and milk, then remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
- Pour the warm frosting over the warm cake and spread evenly. Sprinkle with chopped pecans if desired.
- Allow the cake to cool completely, then cut into small bite-sized squares.
