French Butter Cake

This French Butter Cake, also known as “Gâteau Breton,” is a rich, buttery, and slightly crumbly cake with a delicate sweetness. With its golden crust and melt-in-your-mouth texture, this cake is perfect for breakfast, tea time, or dessert.

Ingredients:

• 2 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

• 1 cup granulated sugar

• 4 large egg yolks

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

• ¼ tsp salt

• 1 egg yolk + 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)

Instructions:

1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8-inch round cake pan with parchment paper.

2. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.

3. Add Egg Yolks & Vanilla: Mix in the egg yolks one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.

4. Incorporate Dry Ingredients: Add the flour and salt, mixing until just combined. The dough will be thick.

5. Shape & Score: Press the dough evenly into the prepared pan. Smooth the surface and use a fork to create a crisscross pattern on top.

6. Egg Wash: Brush the top with the egg yolk and water mixture for a golden crust.

7. Bake: Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

8. Cool & Serve: Let cool completely before slicing. Enjoy with coffee or tea!

This cake is simple yet indulgent—a true French classic! 🍰✨
