Bacon, Onion, and Garlic Fried Cabbage

Southern Fried Cabbage – Simple, tasty, flavored with garlic and bacon – Ready in no time. Fried cabbage is actually a mixture of sautéing, and/or stewing, being cooked low and simmered in its own juices, rather than fried quickly. It is really not “Fried” so don’t be alarmed!

Fried Cabbage is one of those things that we’ve been making for years, but also one of those things that I never thought to put on the blog!
I just love cabbage any way, but this is probably one of my favorite ways to make it. Like with my Squash and Onions a few weeks ago, I made this and then proceeded to eat about half of it all by myself after I shot these images. I suppose there are worse things to eat half of.

Bacon, Onion, and Garlic Fried Cabbage

Ingredients:

5-6 strips of bacon
1 head cabbage, sliced
1 onion, diced
1/4 cup chicken broth (low sodium preferred)
1 teaspoon vinegar (optional)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Directions:

In a large skillet, preferably cast iron, fry the bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon from the skillet and place it on a paper towel to drain excess grease.
In the same skillet with the bacon fat, add the chopped cabbage and onion. Cook over medium heat until the cabbage starts to wilt slightly.
Crumble the cooked bacon and add it back to the skillet with the cabbage and onion.
Pour in the chicken broth and vinegar (if using). Season with salt and pepper.
Cover the skillet and allow the cabbage mixture to simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender.
Serve hot and enjoy! For added variety, consider incorporating diced apples, sliced sausage, noodles, or any other ingredients you desire.
