Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes
Ingredients:
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 small yellow onion, diced
- 1 small green bell pepper, diced
- 8 ounces brown mushrooms, minced
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 cup beef broth
- 8 ounces provolone cheese slices, chopped (use 6 ounces if you prefer it less cheesy)
- 6 brioche hamburger buns
Directions:
- Brown the Beef:
- Add the ground beef to a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Brown until a deep crust forms on about 50% of the beef, then break apart and continue browning until fully cooked.
- Remove the beef from the skillet, leaving the fat behind.
- Cook the Vegetables:
- Add the butter, onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms to the skillet. Let them brown for 1-2 minutes before stirring, then allow them to brown for another 1-2 minutes.
- Combine and Simmer:
- Return the browned beef to the skillet.
- In a small cup, mix the beef broth and cornstarch until smooth.
- Add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and the beef broth-cornstarch mixture to the skillet. Stir well.
- Finish the Filling:
- Cook the mixture until it’s only slightly liquidy (about 75% of the mixture should be above the liquid), approximately 3-5 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and stir in the chopped provolone cheese until melted and well combined.
- Serve:
- Toast the brioche buns and spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves.
- Top with the other half of the buns and serve immediately.
